Probably the most important function in a car that needs to be checked regularly to ensure they work. It’s obvious what brakes are set out to do when you’re driving a car, but it can also be quite hard to tell what brakes are not meant to do. If your brakes are squeaking, getting stuck or just not working altogether; it is highly recommended to check whether the brake drums, discs and/or pads are corroded, worn down or out of place.
MOT CHECKS
It goes without saying that checking your car in for an MOT check once a year. This will really ensure that your car is completely safe to drive and not likely to hurt you and others. If you're unsure of when you need to get your MOT checked, you should check the expiry date as soon as possible and get booked in.
A car won’t move at all without a battery and this will need replacing every couple of years, depending on how often you use your car. All batteries run out eventually, so it’s important to check how your car battery is doing at least once a month. Imagine being halfway through that road trip this weekend and your battery goes flat. No one wants that!
TYRES
A car wouldn’t move anywhere without tyres, so think of your tyres as the foundation to your car. Rubbish and cheap quality tyres are not good, so it’s worth splashing out a little bit more on durable and long-lasting tyres. Unless you want to be replacing your tyres every year and repairing punctures regularly, there really is no excuse to be buying cheap and lousy tyres for your car.
I remember being in a car with someone once and their clutch got stuck on a dual carriage way. They couldn’t move their gear into place and it ended up damaging the mechanism inside the gearbox. If however, this person had done their car safety checks, this problem would have been nipped in the bud and resolved.

I agree, it is really important to stay on top of your car safety checks. I have to admit that I am pretty useless beyond the basics, so I often pop into my local garage and get them to check things over for me. Mich x
ReplyDeleteI think I'd rather get a professional to look it over, just to be on the safe side... but always good to know the basics. x
DeleteGreat advice here, it's always good practice to make sure you are safe.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Better to be safe than sorry!
DeleteThese are some really important checks to make and something every driver should be in the routine of doing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah x
DeleteYes these are such important checks that every driver should be doing to make sure their car is always safe
ReplyDeleteI agree Mellissa. It's so important.
DeleteThese are really important things to cheap and keep on top off although it's so easy to forget when life gets busy. My car is going in for a big service soon so hoping it will have a full check over
ReplyDeleteLaura x
Always good to check your car in for a service :) Hope all is okay with it.
DeleteSafety is very important here, some people try and cut back on it to save money but it's really not worth it to save a bit of cash
ReplyDeleteI would definitely rather pay a bit more for a reputable service!
DeleteSuch an interesting read! I only got my licence last year, but I never really thought about most of these. Guess I should really take the car to be checked out at some point soon. Ha!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting your license. Ah noooo, definitely go get it checked :)
DeleteI definitely should check my car more as its always something that my hubby does for me xxx
ReplyDeleteAw you're lucky to have him to do all that for you!
DeleteGreat awareness article...brakes, tyres in fact all are key and should deffo be checked :) x
ReplyDeleteThanks Melanie x
DeleteIt is so important for your car to be safe. Not just for yourself but also for passengers. I nanny children so I make sure my car is always safe!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I would definitely want my car to be safe if I was travelling with children
DeleteI dont drive and dont have a clue with cars, thankfully hubby is always on the ball with ours!
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky to have him!
DeleteCar safety checks are so important, and I feel like people just don't take the time to do them enough. We're all in so much of a rush all the time!
ReplyDeleteThat's why it's so great to have car servicing places. No excuses! ;)
DeleteI really need to learn a lot more about cars!! My partner drives so I leave it all down to him but even reading this has enlightened me, I literally knew nothing!! Car safety for me is a big deal too because of the kids!
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's why I thought it would be interesting to share because we all know people who drive, and you never know when you might need to put knowledge into practice x
DeleteI always make sure I do regular checks on my car, I would be devasted if something went wrong through my neglect
ReplyDeleteCar safety is a must. I'll take not of all things discussed here and schedule a good time for these to be checked.
ReplyDeleteThese are all such important car checks. Car safety is a must for every car owner, for themselves and everyone else on the roads.
ReplyDeleteLots of great tips here and well done for highlighting them. It's so important to stay on top of everything when it comes to car safety.
ReplyDeleteI am so very lazy and annoying and leave all this to my other half! I have read and digested this advice now though thank you!
ReplyDeleteThe most important safety check is your oil level. Another important thing before driving -
ReplyDeletewait for the car to warm up. Don't just get in an floor it. Low oil level can destroy your engine in the long run and driving without a warm-up will wear everything down.
I don't know what you mean by exhaust cleaning or blocking? I would NEVER recommend cleaning your exhaust - you can easily destroy your cat converter, DPF valves or the exhaust manifold.
The only possible solution is "Carbon Cleaning". Never do it yourself. Carbon/No2 buildup in exhausts can make you and your car seriously ill.
I'm not a professional, nor am I a car driver. Sorry for the inaccuracy but thanks for your extra comments :)
DeleteI have to say I'm really bad for checking my car and making sure it's safe. I really should get to know how to do all the safety checks on it especially with two kids to drive around.
ReplyDeleteI always buy quality tyre because I know how important they are to my car. I have to admit, I have never ever checked my exhaust pipe. Will check it now and will do it often.
ReplyDeleteOh God, I wouldn't even know where to start. Cars are like a foreign lannguage to me. It's good to have the know-how though, even if you can't drive because you never know! We go on roadtrips quite often so it's always better to be safe than sorry.
ReplyDeleteMy breaks giving out on me is one of my biggest fears in life! I need to be better about getting my car serviced.
ReplyDeleteI haven't had my own car for ages, so I leave this to my husband to deal with for his two vehicles.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you about the importance of car safety checks before hitting the road.I use to feel so lazy to do that until my brake failed one day and I almost lost my life. So,I learnt my lesson. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post. Its going to be very helpful to many.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! It's so important to do a proper check up but I prefer to drive automatic so I wouldn't need the clutch. Driving Manually is such a pain for me haha - As always a fab post! X
