THE CONTRACEPTIVE PILL: MY EXPERIENCE

15/05/2017

I have read so many stories about different experiences from women who have been on the contraceptive pill. Some have been positive stories and some have been negative. However, here is my experience.

The contraceptive pill is used not only to prevent pregnancies, but to also control mood swings and help with menstrual cramps too. It's a daunting thing walking into a doctor's surgery and asking them to prescribe you the contraceptive pill. I didn't know back then that you can get contraceptive pills online at The Independent Pharmacy. They have so many different types of pills available, you're bound to find the right one for you.

I have been taking the contraceptive pill on and off for around 4 years now. I have been on two different pills and had two completely different experiences with it.

When I got into a relationship in 2012, I decided that it was best for me to go on the pill to be safe and so I made that dreaded doctors appointment. My doctor is a man which makes "the talk" even more daunting, but I decided to just word-vomit why I wanted the pill.

My doctor went through the different contraceptive methods with me; including the coil and the injection. Looking back now, these are methods of contraception that I would have liked to try, but I always felt the pill was an easy enough solution for me.

For the first few months, the pill I was on was fine and worked for me. Not only were my periods lighter and shorter, but I was also able to have sex without the fear of getting pregnant*. However, leading up to the break of that relationship, I soon felt like getting out of bed was a struggle. I never seemed to laugh anymore and every day just seemed to be extra long and tedious, so I went back to my doctor and told him how I was feeling. To this day, I have no idea if that was down to the relationship or the pill. However, I decided to stop taking it altogether.

I soon came out of that relationship and had to no reason to start a pill again, because I wasn't having regular sex with anyone. However, the summer was soon approaching and holidays were being booked and I also had my parents' wedding to attend. I didn't really want to be on my period for any of these events, so I decided to enquire about going back onto the pill.

I had a chat with my doctor and he decided to put me on a different pill. This was back in 2014 and since then, I have been on and off with another contraceptive pill from a different brand. Each pack has 21 pills and then there's a 7 day break of no pills, which is when my period comes. It usually comes on day 3 of the pill free week and only lasts 2-3 days - literally the best thing ever!

This is the best pill I have been on and the only one that I would consider staying on until I am ready to start a family in the future. It works for me and I have no complaints in the 3 years that I've been taking it. However, every woman's body is different so it may take trying a few different pills before you find the one that is right for you.

* I am aware that the contraceptive pill is not 100% effective and that there's a small chance that pregnancy can still occur.

  1. I took it for a short while when I was younger, but it didn't agree with me at all, so I abandoned and let my hubby take responsibility.

  2. It's great that you found a pill that suits you. I also heard lots of stories and I don't feel confident enough to take it, but I'm ok without it too x

  3. I've only just gone onto the pill at the age of 27, and I'm about to get married! I've only been put onto it to avoid catching Zika virus whilst we're on honeymoon, but can totally see the convenience of it now I've been on it for a few months.

I'd always been told I couldn't go on the pill due to a circulation problem, so it's annoying that over the years of my unpredictable periods that turn up whenever they liked I could have regulated them after all!

  4. I found this really interesting as everyones experiences are different - I had an awful time when I took the pill, made my moods low and caused bad leg cramping. I think I might try a coil next time and see how I get on

  6. I was on the pill when I was younger but had adverse side effects. That being said it all depends on the pill, I am on the implant at the moment which also has side effects but not as much as before. Great post x

  7. I've been on a pill since not long after I started my periods (at 10), I have extremely bad periods, very heavy and my mood swings are intense. I tried to come off them in my early twenties to see if things had calmed down and oh my goodness I scared myself. These days I'm on one that means I don't have a period at all. Which is awesome.

  8. I think some pills can work really well to regulate mood and improve skin, as well as being a contraceptive. I found since I changed mine my skin is not so good any more

  9. Being in a same sex relationship the pill hasn't been anything I have ever required, however I have heard for some people it helps with periods and other menstrual issues some people have.

  10. I have been on a few different ones, I found a couple didn't help my mood at all and sent me crazy but fingers crossed the one I am on now is ok for me

  11. I've never gone on the pill. There are only certain types of contraception i can have as i suffer from migraines. I can't have estrogen as it apparently makes me at risk for stroke. I'm on the injection as it works for me, don't have to worry about taking it every day either. I do however want permanent contraception as i never want kids, been thinking about it for years now

  15. I've never tried the pill as I am so forgetful I'd worry about not remembering to take it so I have the implant and thankfully it's been great for me although I know people whose bodies haven't got on with it x

  16. I had strange side effects the last time I went on the pill - will definitely check this out as I still think I prefer pills as a method of contraception

  20. I never really used the pill much unless I wanted to delay a period for a holiday. I can be a tricky topic to bring up with a male doctor.

  21. My mummy suffers from Endometriosis and was prescribed the pill at 15, she came off it when she married and hasn't thought about going back to it. There are so many different brands nowadays and she was on one that made her gain loads of weight and she felt crap. Glad you've found one that works x
