BEING A "JOBLESS" GRADUATE 2 YEARS ON

20/06/2016

I graduated university two whole years ago and I still haven't become the next Rankin. I still to this day have absolutely no idea why I studied Photography because I have never had any future goals to become the next best fashion photographer. But hey ho, here I am two years later with a degree I'll never use to its best ability.

I've touched lightly before on what my plans are for the future and what my hopes and dreams are. I crave a job in the digital marketing or PR world but it's simply not that easy. Competition alongside only being 23 with no direct experience in the field are the two biggest downfalls any person could have.

Having my blog means I have been on the other side of the fence for nearly five years. I have successfully built my own brand from scratch and I watch it grow a little bit more each and every day.  I am the person working with brands every day; liaising with digital marketeers and PR's constantly. I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved along the way and couldn't ask for more in that respect. I like being in control of my content and social media channels. I thoroughly enjoy jotting down new ideas for content and shooting new images. I basically love it all. Blogging is my number one passion and I sometimes wish a degree in blogging existed because 1) I definitely would have studied it and 2) I think I would actually know what direction my life was heading in.

So, what am I getting at?

I recently came across Spotlight Recruitment who are a marketing recruitment agency based in London. They make it super easy for fresh off the boat graduates like myself and more experienced people who are looking for a new challenge in industry sectors such as digital marketing, PR, e-commerce and SEO/PPC.

I am simply changing different aspects of my life and instead of concentrating on scouring through job sites and submitting every week to 20 companies with a covering letter and my CV in the hope of hearing back from at least one; I am just going to sit back and enjoy the ride of working on my blog and enjoying life. I am going to limit myself to job searching on marketing recruitment agencies only in the hope that someone eventually sees my creativity and determination and decides to employ me. I have no more interest in looking for part time shop work to earn a few extra pennies. Absolutely none.

Saying all of this, I am aware that I'm not the only jobless graduate with unreached dreams that simply feels like a walking failure every single day. I know that competition is tough; especially in the industry that I want to go into but I am determined that I will get to the place I want to be in one day. Whether it takes me another two years of working part time and building my own brand up a whole load more; I will get there. Nothing comes easy after all. Conquering your biggest dreams takes an extreme amount of hard work, passion and... maybe a little bit of sheer luck.

  1. How exactly I feel, I just finished a Dance degree, and whilst I love dancing I don't want to be a performer a choreographer so I've decided to take on a MA degree in dance therapy & blog along the side; awesome post though, thanks for sharing X

    1. Hello, thanks for your comment!

Ah, at least you have somewhat got a plan that's related to dance. Sounds like you have a good plan in the works. Good luck :)

  2. I love this! This is exactly how I've been feeling recently. I've just completed an English Literature degree but I have absolutely no desire to go into teaching so there's no straight forward path for me. I found that scouring job sites completely destroyed my morale and self-esteem so I limit myself to 1 day a week and only apply to things that genuinely interest me! In the meantime I'm happy enjoying life and working on my blog!
It's so nice to hear that I'm not the only one with that attitude!

    1. Hey Emily. Congrats on finishing your degree! It's such a wonderful feeling, isn't it? I was going to go into teaching once upon a time too but that plan failed quicker than the thought even hit me. I'm happy just like you, doing my own little thing and taking time out for myself. When the time's right, we'll find where we are meant to be, doing what we are meant to be doing ;-)

  3. I managed to luck out getting a marketing job in a theatre after my drama degree - but it was my work outside of my degree (student paper, etc) that helped a LOT. You'll get there - what you're doing with your blog is such a good advantage, it just takes time sometimes :)

    1. Hey Milly. Ah, that's so lucky! I think I might try and get some more freelance work to see if that helps me out a bit. I'm just SO impatient!

  5. I feel you! I graduated two years ago with a degree in literature, culture and linguistics. I wanted to break into the journalism/publishing sector but no chance at all. It was so, so hard and I kind of gave up, because let's face it after a while you simply need a job and keep life going. So funnily, I found and got jobs in the sector you'd like to break into very easily. I first worked at a very small PR agency for fashion and lifestyle clients and then moved on to London. I now work in SEO for a big digital marketing agency. It is ok and it pays the bills but it's not my dream. However, what I wanted to tell you basically is you may end up in a different industry but you just roll with it. On a more positive note, my company is very open to graduates and I could refer your CV to our HR department? Let me know what you think x

    1. Hey Carolin. Super sorry for the late reply! Happy graduation for 2 years ago. I wanted to study literature at one point too! That's exactly what it was like for me. After finishing my photography degree, I worked freelance as a fashion photographer for a year but it was all unpaid work because fresh out of uni "photographers" never get paid for anything... even the good ones!

I have interned a fair bit and absolutely loved working in fashion PR. I felt very much at home. I always get told the same thing after interviews in digital marketing agencies... " You sound very passionate, you know what you want, your blog is great but I am afraid you lack on the SEO side of things as you have no in-house experience' ... even though I have a knowledge of SEO through teaching myself. I once got to a third stage interview because I prepared a presentation on SEO in the second interview which got me my third interview and then they dropped right at the last minute. SUPER frustrating but you live and learn.

That's very kind of you. I won't get my hopes up but if your company are open to graduates (unlike SO many), then that would be great. What's the best email to email you with my CV?

      Thanks!

  6. I know how you feel! It's so tough out there, I have interned at over 5 different brands and magazines even throughout university and found it difficult to then find opportunities once graduating. I totally agree recruitment agency's are great as you get to be interviewed just the way you are, without trying to please no specific person.

Don't give up on your dreams and keep blogging! It's totally normal to be doing something for now for money (even better if you enjoy it of course) I am doing that myself in hope that my blog will soon earn me the living :)

    Good luck!

  7. You are definitely not alone with this! I'm a year on, and got so fed up of being rejected for jobs I was overqualified for so decided to apply for a masters starting in september - luckily I go on. But you will get to wherever it is you want to be because ultimately, hard work and determination pays off xxx

    1. I hope not! It sometimes feel like I am the only unhappy graduate in the world, but then I remember I am one of 1000's!
I recently got told in a job interview that I am too "over qualified" for the role too. Ludicrous! Good luck for your masters. What subject is in?

  8. Interesting post! I got my job in digital marketing last year with no degree or experience. What seemed to help me most was the amount of interest I'd shown and the amount of work I did in my own time purely for enjoyment. I honestly thought I'd never get my dream job but trust me, just keep working hard and things will work out. x

    1. Hey Lucinda,

Oh you are SO lucky girl! What do you mean by work in your own time - do you have a blog? Hopefully I get somewhere one day!
